Diabeloop announced Monday it has integrated Roche's Accu-Chek Insight insulin pump into its DBLG1 automated insulin delivery (AID) system. The combined solution for type 1 diabetes management will be available in Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands early this year.
Erik Huneker, CEO of Diabeloop, remarked that "combining our self-learning algorithm with the reliability and accuracy of the Accu-Chek Insight insulin pump allows Diabeloop and Roche to propose a safe, easy-to-use and individualised treatment management solution." Marcel Gmuender, head of Roche's diabetes care unit, noted that "the Accu-Chek Insight insulin pump will be the first pump with a pre-filled cartridge that can be operated in hybrid closed-loop mode."
The news follows a recent tie-up by the companies to bring to market hybrid closed-loop systems for patients with diabetes, marking Roche's debut in AID. For related analysis, see Wider View: Better late than never for Roche to loop into AID.
According to Diabeloop, the CE-marked DBLG1 system personalises treatment by automating insulin decisions. It connects continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), an insulin pump and a self-learning algorithm hosted in a dedicated handset to function as a hybrid-closed loop. Diabeloop said the algorithm analyses data in real time, taking into account physiology, history and data entries for meals or exercise, "to determine either to maintain current settings, adjust or even stop basal insulin delivery to avoid a predicted low/high or deliver a bolus to correct a high."
Speaking to FirstWord HealthTech, a spokesperson for Diabeloop said the company chose Accu-Chek Insight for integration with DBGL1, rather than other Accu-Chek insulin pumps, as it "allows us to reach a broad user base in first European countries and will allow both companies to gain knowledge and experience to decide on further development activities." Diabeloop indicated that Roche will be responsible for distributing the new hybrid closed-loop system, which would be paired with the Dexcom G6 CGM.
"The integrated solution DBLG1 system with Accu-Chek Insight insulin pump is especially attractive for people with diabetes on intensive insulin therapy who have an interest in using loop-mode and want to improve therapy outcomes or experience more convenience on a daily basis," the spokesperson added.
