Goa diagnostic company’s tuberculosis device could help scale up Covid-19 testing - (The Economic Times via NewsPoints Desk)

  • Molbio Diagnostics's Truenat device is set to become one of the key diagnostic tools as India looks to expand its testing capacity for COVID-19, as reported The Economic Times on Tuesday.

  • Truenat, a product that's been used to detect tuberculosis, speeds up the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique that detects the presence of the coronavirus.

  • CEO Sriram Natarajan said that Truenat can produce results in much faster time than the usual RT-PCR tests.

  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said that positive tests using the Truenat device have to be reconfirmed by the traditional RT-PCR test.

  • However, Molbio Diagnostics reportedly expects Truenat to be declared a primary diagnostic device in the coming weeks.

  • The company received an order from ICMR for 1.2 million test kits and 500 devices, and is working to expand the number of devices to 2000 as the ICMR targets completing 100,000 tests a day, Natarajan said.
